Under the heading 'On rivers,' Leonardo analyses why waves break against a river's current rather than with it, reckoning their impact at 8 degrees of velocity, and in a separate note treats the flux and reflux set up wherever a stream slows. Two geometrical fragments compare the sectors of a semicircle (six lesser sectors equal to one sector b c) and a figure of intersecting circles; another warns that painters err in rendering reflections, since water and eye view an object from opposite sides. A final fragment measures the force of percussion between two suspended balls (8, 7), strongest when the struck body moves to meet the blow.

Why waves break against the current
In the profile of a breaking wave, water falls along a line of the crest and foams where it meets resistance. Because falling water cannot rebound on a surface that flees, river waves break against the current, not with it; the wave's fall of 4 degrees of velocity meeting water of another 4 makes a percussion of 8 degrees.
Flux and reflux of waters
Every motion of water makes flux and reflux wherever its course is retarded. A level pool receives more water than it discharges, so its water rises until its weight overcomes what drives it; descending against the current it engorges the stream, retarding it until fresh water superabounds and generates a new flux.

The painter's error in reflections
Painters are often deceived in depicting water, making it show what the man sees; but the water sees the object from one side and the man from the other. A single body may thus be seen front and back, above and below, because the water shows the image one way and the eye sees it another.

Two suspended balls collide, marked 8 and 7. A blow on an object that flees is weak; on one that moves against the striker it is strong; on a motionless object it is of middling power; and on a swift wheel it is weak, especially when striker and wheel move equally.
