The sheet is dominated by a self-acting water-raising engine worked out in full detail: a 500-pound counterweight, an 80-pound secondary weight, and specified heights (54 braccia from pulley to counterweight, 18 braccia from the rocca to the water) drive a threefold lift. Leonardo notes that the roughly 400 pounds of surplus water each cycle can turn four Archimedean screws above, which return a thousand pounds to the same trough for every four hundred spent. Alongside are a row of four screws, a bucket that fills as it runs down an inclined plane, and a reel-driven pump for drawing a great quantity of water.

Self-acting lift specified by weights and heights
The main figure lists its whole design: counterweight 500 pounds, a second counterweight 80 pounds, the vat's timber 60 pounds, 100 pounds of water in the rise, 54 braccia from pulley to counterweight, 18 braccia from the rocca to the water. Each time the counterweight touches ground the device is said to gain 400 pounds or more.
Four screws recycling the surplus water
The 400 pounds of surplus water can turn the four screws set above, so that for every 400 they return a thousand pounds into the same trough. A separate figure shows the system of four Archimedean screws captioned 'raising of water.'
