Gravity and levity of fire, air, water and earth; a table of chapters on how running water strikes objects, banks and falls
Two mounted fragments, both covered edge to edge in Leonardo's mirror script. The upper fragment develops a theory of the gravity and levity of the four elements, assigning them a doubling scale of weights (fire 2, air 4, water 8, earth 16, gold 32) and closing with an experiment weighing distilled turpentine oil, water and quicksilver in a parallel-sided vessel, plus a figure of a transparent cup formed from a pig's bladder. The lower fragment lays out a detailed plan for a projected "Book of the percussions of waters", a long list of chapters on how flowing water strikes objects, undermines river banks, and behaves in falls.

Weights assigned to the four elements
Leonardo sets the quintessence above fire and molten gold below earth, then assigns weights in a doubling scale: one measure of fire weighs 2, of air 4, of water 8, of earth 16, and of gold 32. He works through how many degrees of a heavier element must be lent to sink or raise a lighter one so that their gravity and levity cancel.
Rules of heavy and light elements
Marginal axioms: a light element sunk in a heavy liquid will not stay submerged of itself; a light element reduces the weight of a heavier one by its own weight; adding light to light makes lighter, heavy to heavy makes heavier. No body lighter than air will descend to earth except with the aid of a body heavier than air.
Transparent cup formed from a pig's bladder
Beside the figure lettered P and p: a pig's bladder, wetted and stretched over the end of a rod one inch thick and left to dry, then slipped off, cut in the shape of a drinking-glass, and thinly varnished within and without with amber varnish.
Plan for a Book on the percussion of waters
The lower fragment opens a "Book of the percussions of waters against various objects" and enumerates chapters: encounters of water with standing, immobile, movable and bendable objects, and with objects that yield in a circular motion, such as the wheels of water-driven machines.
Chapters on falling water and river banks
Further headings treat the fall of water perpendicular and at various obliquities, the scouring of river beds and banks, great stones moved by small torrents, and how water after a fall does not continue straight but builds a bank from the material it has dug out.
