Proportion exercise: equalizing the ratio of 6 to 2
A sheet of fraction jottings with a worked ratio and small linear diagrams
The right half of the sheet is a scatter of fractions and small numbers, while the left half carries a worked proportion: recognizing that 6 stands to 2 as a triple, and dividing 4 so that one part goes to the 2 and three parts to the 6 to preserve the ratio. Small linear diagrams of rods and hung weights run along the lower edge, and the Ambrosiana's classification links the sheet to studies of communicating vessels and of water not rising above its source level. Dividing 4 to equalize the ratio of 6 to 2
First see what proportion 6 has with 2, which is a triple. Then divide the 4 into as many parts as will equal the proportion: give one part to the 2 and let the three remain to the 6. Then the one taken from the 2 stands to the three taken from the 6 as 6 stood to 2.
Small rod-and-weight diagrams
Along the lower edge are small linear figures of horizontal rods with weights or rings hung beneath, continuing the statics studies of the surrounding leaves. They carry short numeric labels not included in the transcription.
