The common centre of the elements and the centre of gravity
A dense cosmological essay distinguishing the fixed centre of the universe from the shifting centre of the earth
This closely written page, with small diagrams of the elemental spheres and balances, develops Leonardo's cosmology of gravity. He defines the centre of true gravity of a body as unique, indivisible and 'without place', the soul and guide of heavy bodies, such that any cut through it halves the body's weight, and he distinguishes it carefully from the 'common centre' of the elements. That common (or universal) centre, equidistant from the spheres of air and fire, is fixed, whereas the centre of the earth is unstable, shifting as tides carry water across the shores; a stone released midway between the two would fall to the common centre and oscillate about it like a pendulum. Further passages deny that bodies fall by desire or magnetic attraction, ascribing their motion to the contrariety of the elements, and argue that the sphere of water is neither of equal thickness nor perfectly round.

The centre of gravity: unique, indivisible, 'the soul of heavy bodies'
The centre of the true gravity of a body is unique and single, without place, in the middle of the body, surrounded on every side by equal weight, so that any straight cut through it divides the body into two equal weights. This is the centre that seems to be the soul and life of heavy bodies and the guide of their motions.
The universal centre is the centre of no single element
The universal centre of the elements is the centre of none of them, for having no stability they can have no single centre. Some hold the sphere of fire is driven by the sun's rays in a straight line; this is denied, since fire being corporeal cannot move to us without time as the solar ray does.
A stone midway between two centres falls to the common centre
Let a be the centre of the elements (the common centre), c the centre of the world, and b the place where a stone is left in the air at equal distance from the two centres. The stone b will descend to a, the common centre, and will not rise toward the centre of the earth; on reaching the centre it loses its heaviness.
The earth's centre shifts as tides move water across the shores
The centre of the earth is unstable and in continuous change, for it moves as often as the winds carry the sea's water, covering or uncovering the shores by their surging. Taking weight from one part and adding it to another makes the centre now recede, now approach the common centre.
A falling body oscillates like a pendulum before it rests
A particle would not stop at once at the common centre but, by its impetus, overshoot toward the far side of the element and return, again and again with ever shorter courses, like a weight on the end of a cord pulled aside and released, until at last it stops beneath the fixed point of the cord.
Bodies fall by contrariety of elements, not by attraction like a magnet
The motion of heavy bodies toward the common centre is neither desire in the body to find that centre, nor an attraction the centre exerts like a magnet, but the supreme contrariety of the elements: fire stays highest, earth lowest, and each seeks its like, so the shortest, perpendicular way carries a stone downward.
