How a bird soars higher by circling on the wind
Turning with a wingtip, reversing with the tail, and climbing by compressing air

Soaring higher in a half-circle on the wind
If the bird curves its motion into a half-circumference, it ends with its beak turned toward the place from which the deflection began. Done against the oncoming wind, the end of the deflected motion rises much higher than the start of the incident motion, and this is how the bird climbs without beating its wings, always circling.
A motion persists while its mover's impression remains
To turn suddenly to one side the bird thrusts that wing's tip toward its tail. Because every moved body keeps moving while the impression of its mover's power is preserved in it, the wing's furious motion carries the whole bird around until the impetus of the moved air is spent.
Reversing course with the tail
The tail, presented face-on and striking the wind with it, makes the bird move suddenly in the contrary direction.
Climbing by compressing air beneath the wings
From the disposition a n c e the bird raises its shoulders m o into the figure b m n o d e, pressing the air between its ribs and the tips of the wings. This condenses the air and gives it upward motion, generating an impetus that thrusts the bird upward.
