The wing's hand makes the impetus; the elbow wedges the air
Impetus 6 against weight 6, motion along the square's diagonal, and lowering the elbows to climb
On folio 14v Leonardo explains that the hand of the wing creates the impetus while the elbow is first held edge-on so as not to impede it, then dropped oblique so the air beneath forms a wedge on which the wing rises, preventing the bird from sinking as the wing returns forward. In a worked example he sets the impetus at 6 and the weight at 6, and when the impetus falls to 3 at mid-motion the oblique wing checks the descent along the diagonal of a square, so the bird moves straight through the line of equality e f rather than down a b or up d c. He adds that the elbows are not all lowered at once, but only as much as needed: lowered at once to shoot upward, held up to descend. Three little squares with diagonals (a b, c d, e f) and a hand-and-wing sketch fill the right margin.

The hand of the wing causes the impetus, so its elbow is set edge-on so as not to impede the motion that creates it. Once the impetus is made, the elbow lowers and becomes oblique, and the air beneath forms a wedge on which the wing rises; without this the bird would sink as the wing returns forward, but the elbow's percussion resists the descent and raises the bird again.
Impetus 6 against weight 6: motion along the square's diagonal
Let the impetus be as 6 and the bird weigh 6; when at mid-motion the impetus falls to 3 while the weight stays 6, the bird would descend by half the motion along the diagonal of the square. The oblique wing in contrary aspect neither lets the weight descend along a b nor lets the bird climb along d c, so it moves straight through the site of equality e f.
Lowering the elbows to climb, holding them up to descend
The elbows are not all lowered at the start, or the bird would leap up in the first rush of the impetus; they lower only as much as needed to check the descent, at the bird's discretion. To run suddenly upward the bird lowers the elbows at once after generating the impetus, but to descend it holds the elbows still up.
