The shoulder pole and how birds soar in a semicircle
Muscles that raise and lower the elbow, the flight-lines a b c d, and balance about the centre of gravity
On folio 14r Leonardo describes the pole of a bird's shoulder as turned by the muscles of the breast and back, which gives the bird the discretion to raise or lower its elbow at will. He then concludes that birds rise without beating their wings solely through circular motion within the wind's motion: tracing a semicircle from a down to c and back through c d a, the bird ends its deflected motion much higher than, and perpendicularly above, where its incident motion began. A closing passage explains that the wings resist equally only when their tips are equidistant from the centre of gravity, so that bringing one tip nearer causes the bird to descend on that side. Small pen sketches of birds and looping flight-lines mark the right margin.

The pole of a bird's shoulder is turned by the muscles of the breast and of the back. From this arises the bird's discretion to lower or raise the elbow according to its will and the necessity of its movement.
Soaring in a semicircle on the wind (a, b, c, d)
Leonardo concludes that birds climb without beating their wings only through circular motion within the wind's motion. The wind goes from a to c; the bird moves from a declining through a b c, and at c takes up the deflected motion through c d a, ending much higher than it began, with the end of the deflected motion set perpendicularly above the start of the incident motion.
Balance depends on the wing tips being equidistant from the centre of gravity
The wings resist equally only because their extremities are equally remote from the bird's centre of gravity. When one wing tip is brought nearer to the centre of gravity than the other, the bird descends on the side where the tip is closer.
