The ratio a n to n m when a load is pulled at a right angle
This page relates a moving force to the load it displaces by means of a pulley and cords. In the upper diagram a weight hung on a cord is drawn sideways over a pulley (labelled 8) within a quarter-circle frame; Leonardo states that the ratio of a n to n m equals the ratio of the moving weight to the moved weight when the pull is made at a right angle. A lower square-and-diagonal figure, marked 3, 1, 4, repeats the case of a suspended weight shifted by another cord.

A weight hangs by a cord and is drawn aside by a second cord over a pulley (marked 8). Leonardo states that the proportion between the segments a n and n m equals the proportion between the weight that moves and the weight that is moved, provided the pull is made at a right angle.
