Self-disengaging screw-and-nut mechanism
A threaded rod that runs off its teeth; a plane iron for iron
Folio 84r details a screw-and-nut mechanism (vite and madre) in which a cross-iron, labelled S and m, can lock the screw to its nut so it pulls no further and the device is spared from breaking. A long note explains how the screw's teeth are cut so that, once the blade has passed out of the drawplate, the threads run out into a smooth shank, letting the nut's wheel turn freely while the operator safely withdraws the blade. A smaller caption labels a plane iron for planing iron, and a lower diagram lettered c, n, a, b shows one motor drawing two moving bodies whose ends travel unequally.

Cross-iron that locks the screw to its nut
When the cross-iron stands opposite m (S with m), the screw turns together with its nut and pulls no further; otherwise everything would break. To drive the screw forward again, one pulls out the iron S and turns the handle h.
Screw teeth running out into a smooth shank
The screw's teeth are arranged so that after the blade leaves the drawplate the threads are gradually consumed, leaving a smooth length of shank in the nut. The nut's wheel can then turn alone while the operator withdraws the blade without endangering the instrument.
One motor drawing two bodies unequally at c
A single motor's travel draws the beginnings of two moving bodies equally, while the travel of their ends is varied. At c everything joined to it is unfastened, so that c moves and drags the ends of whatever it is joined to.
