A Weight-Driven Table Fountain and the Force of Compressed Air
A lead-weighted wineskin drives a jet, with a battery of hydrostatic and pneumatic questions
Leonardo designs a self-contained table fountain in which a lead weight of about 100 pounds pressing a thin-leather wineskin ('otro') drives water upward, and uses it to pose a set of hydrostatic questions: how much the water weighs on the bottom versus the walls of its vessel, and how high a jet can rise compared with the level of its source. Invoking pressure spread equally in every direction (the 'fifth of the third'), he reckons that one pound out of a hundred acts at a mouth one-hundredth of the bag's volume, and that the force doubles as the bag is squeezed to half its emptiness. He even prescribes measuring the ejected jet by catching it in a pre-weighed woolen cloth. Beside a small drawing of a lead-weighted wineskin and a twin-jet spout, Leonardo notes that this arrangement, for a fountain to stand on a table, gives a more uniform flow than any other method.
How high a jet rises versus its source (a r, r c)
If the pipe a r were very long and the rising part r c short, to what limit would the water spurt of its own accord into the air? He asks why the jet does not reach the height of the water's surface whence it descends, at what heights it just matches that surface, and why the proportion then fails.
Weight of water on floor and walls; the bellows' one pound in a hundred
He asks how much more the water weighs on the vessel's bottom than its sides, and where most and least, adding that whoever defines this can state the nature of every water instrument. By the fifth of the third, the 100 pounds pressing the bellows push equally everywhere, so that the mouth being a hundredth of the volume, a single pound drives the air, and the receiving void of twelve times that hole feels one ounce per twelfth part.
Why a wineskin presses harder as it closes, and weighing the jet
The leather wineskin presses more strongly the more it is squeezed: with the mouth a hundredth of its emptiness one pound of the hundred acts there, but at half its emptiness the mouth becomes a fiftieth, so two pounds act and the power is doubled — an increase impossible in stiff wooden-jointed bellows. He prescribes catching the whole jet in a pre-weighed woolen cloth and halving the gain, counting only the water that rose.
