How driving and driven teeth must engage
The driving tooth always stands behind the driven one from the start of contact to its end. If teeth meet point-to-bottom or point-to-point before the wheels' centers come into line the motion will not take effect, and if the driving tooth enters the slot deeper than the gap between the slot's points it cannot come out and the motion stops.
Tooth wear is proportional to the ratio of tooth numbers
In contact the pinion's teeth wear more than the wheel's in the same proportion as their numbers differ: if the wheel has 60 teeth and the pinion 6, then in one full turn of the wheel each pinion tooth is touched ten times while each wheel tooth is touched once. Hence the wheel with fewer teeth must be given a harder temper.
Fine versus large teeth, materials, and a steel bearing ring
Fine teeth give brief, good contact and should sit on a thicker iron wheel so the wide contact wears less; large teeth are deeper and more durable but opposite in effect. Teeth should be of equal thickness with spacing varied between driver and driven, and the pivot hole should carry a ring of tempered steel; some made the wheels of brass and the pinions of tempered steel.
