Motions for Clockwork: Contrary, Reciprocating, Push-and-Pull
A silent oscillating drive for clocks and other reversing mechanisms
Three brief captions name mechanical motions worked out in the surrounding pen studies. One is a method for producing two contrary motions at the same time, likened to the action of pincers; another is a weighted oscillating motion that goes and returns to keep the time of clocks, and does so without noise; the third is simply a motion that pushes and pulls. The sheet is crowded with grooved drums, ratchets, a weighted saw-toothed wheel and jointed levers illustrating these reversing and reciprocating drives.

Two contrary motions at once, like pincers
A method, should the need arise, for making two contrary motions at the same time, like that of the pincers (tongs).
A silent reciprocating drive for clocks
A motion in the manner of an oscillating vane (rosta) that goes and returns and serves for the timekeeping of clocks, being weighted; and this will be without noise.
A motion that pushes and pulls
The caption above the lower figure names a motion that pushes and pulls, illustrating a drive that reverses its thrust.
