Gravity, impetus, and the descent to the world's centre
The heavier part leads the fall, water rounds into a sphere, and a river poured down a well through the earth
Folio 190v gathers propositions on gravity and impetus. Leonardo states that a support resists least where it is farthest from its fastening, that every heavy body takes the shortest path and directs itself to the accidental centre of the world, and that in descent the heavier part places itself below the lighter and becomes the guide of the motion. He defines impetus as an increase of velocity caused by the fleeing air, which offers ever less resistance as it flees. Two thought-experiments use water: a quantity let fall toward the world's centre would round itself into a perfect sphere, and a river turned into a well bored through to the far hemisphere would pour first from whichever mouth lay nearer the earth's centre. The right and left margins carry further brief jottings beyond the transcribed blocks.

A support resists least where it lies farthest from its fastening; every heavy body moves by the shortest path, and one freely descending directs itself to the accidental centre of the world. The heavier part settles beneath the lighter along the perpendicular and guides the motion.
Impetus is an increase of velocity from the fleeing air
The body that descends more gains a swifter, more impetuous motion. Impetus is the increase of velocity in motion, caused by the fleeing air: thrust forward by the moving body, it drives the air behind it and, fleeing, resists ever less, so the body hastens the more.
Water falling to the world's centre rounds into a sphere
If a quantity of water were let fall toward the centre of the world, surrounded by air, it would certainly make itself a perfect round, and its centre would be the centre of the world.
A river poured into a well bored through the earth
Were a well dug through to the other hemisphere and a river turned into it, the water would pour first from whichever mouth lay nearer the earth's centre. With mouths equidistant it would fill equally, and a just-sufficient river would pour equally from either hemisphere.
A bolt drawn feathers-forward turns at once
If the bolt is drawn with its feathers forward, it will immediately turn itself about, so that the heavier head leads.
