Three definitions of the blow
The blow is the terminus of a rapid motion made by bodies into resistant objects; it is the cause of all sounds and of breakage, briefest in operation yet greatest in power. Its result is the utmost velocity and penetration, and it leaves its origin in circular movement, being wholly and entire in every part.
A proportion of water's descent and advance
If water descends one finger per mile and moves forward at one mile per hour, how far forward will it move in descending two fingers? The note poses the ratio without solving it.
The hurled stone travels farther in circular movement
The parts of a stone driven by force and hurled against the earth have a longer and faster course, and make greater clamor, than before—because, in a line then struck through, these parts make circular movement after their percussion.
On motion
Motion is caused by force and applied to bodies displaced from their places. Quick, powerful causes make it rapid; slow causes make its course brief; and it does not end without doing violence to whatever opposes it.
