Under the heading 'device for water,' the upper drawing shows a pump driven by a water-wheel to raise water, with a note that a second pump can be worked by a cord as well as by a toothed wheel. Below, an apparatus for measuring hydraulic or pneumatic pressure balances water through a spout fitted with a small clapper-valve at its mouth a: the water between M and n is reckoned at 25 pounds while the counterweighting water is 1,000 pounds.
