Below, Leonardo describes a covered boat built of beams with a wide oar-wheel hidden inside, running in a channel from end to end where the wheel can touch the water. A lower diagram shows three superimposed wheels whose teeth mesh onto the pinions of the wheels beneath in a 'cart of convenient movement,' the lowest wheel toothless because it rolls on the ground; an accompanying table of ratios (8, 10, 12, 14 to 1) multiplies out to figures rising to 48,000.

Three-tier geared cart with reduction table
In this cart of convenient movement wheel a rests with its teeth on the pinion at the centre of wheel b, whose teeth rest on the pinion of wheel c, kept toothless because it runs on the ground. Three braccia separate ground and pulling-point, and up to four wheels could be stacked; the ratio table (8:1, 10:1, 12:1, 14:1) climbs to 48,000.
