Cast Shadows and Their Central Axes
The axis of every cast shadow, and why a shadow lightens away from its middle
This page continues the treatise on cast shadows with diagrams of luminous and shadowing bodies and their projected penumbrae. Leonardo argues that the central axis of every derivative (cast) shadow runs straight through the middle of the primary shadow, the derivative light, and the centers of both the shadowing body and the source. He further shows that a cast shadow grows less dark the farther it lies from its own middle, since more of the source's rays reach the outer regions. The central axis of every cast shadow
The middle of the length of each derivative shadow lies straight to the middle of the primary shadow, the derivative light, and the centers of the shadowing and luminous bodies. Because the straight luminous lines from the source touch the extremes of the opaque body, they stay equidistant from the middle of whatever they enclose, so a symmetrically lit body casts a symmetrical shadow.
A shadow lightens away from its middle
That part of the primary and derivative shadow is less dark the farther it lies from its middle, because it is then seen by a greater quantity of luminous rays. The triangle d g r sees none of the light a S and stays darkest, while triangles f t K and c r i, reached by part of the light, are brighter shadows.
