Why the rudder sits astern; how air struck at a bird's sides steers it
Continuing the ship-and-bird comparison, Leonardo explains that the ship's rudder is set astern because the water, furrowed open by the hull, falls back into the created hollow and strikes the rudder as it closes; at the kite's tail it is instead the air that furiously shuts the vacuum left behind the moving bird. He then analyzes how the parts of the bird that project beyond its central line strike the sides of the wake, so that projections forward on the right or behind on the left curve the straight motion accordingly. A right-margin note observes that the spread tail feels a share of the bird's weight in proportion to its size relative to the body, and that the impetus of the bird, not the closing air behind it, drives it forward, drawing the air after it as a sheath. Falling water strikes the stern rudder as the wake closes
The water furrowed and opened by the ship's course falls back from its raised banks into the created concavity and strikes the rudder with more or less power as it descends. The current, closing the center of that hollow, falls with impetus onto the rudder.
Air shuts the vacuum behind the kite's tail
At the kite's tail it is the percussion of the air that with fury shuts up the vacuum left behind by the bird's motion, and this happens from every aspect of that left-behind vacuum.
Projecting parts strike the wake and steer the turn
The bird's sides strike the air of the wake with the parts that exceed its central line: projections forward of the middle on the right curve the straight motion rightward, and those behind the middle on the opposite side curve it leftward. The tail's share of weight and how impetus draws the air
The spread tail feels a share of the whole bird's weight in the proportion its open area bears to the rest of the body about the center d e. It is not the closing air behind that drives the bird, but the impetus that opens and drives the air before it while drawing the air after it as a sheath.
