Keeping Wind from Overturning a Bird; Perforated Wings in Ascent
Why larks climb in a straight line while birds of prey must rise in a spiral
The heading proposes a remedy so that the wind does not turn a bird upside down, and Leonardo records having seen a bird flipped over by a leftward wind that caught under its left wing. He explains the mechanism of powered ascent: on the upstroke the wing feathers separate and let air through, while on the downstroke they close so that the compressed, condensed air cannot yield fast enough, rebounding the bird upward on its acquired impetus. Straight-rising birds such as the lark repeat this opening and closing of the feathers, whereas birds of prey, which do not spread their feathers so, must ascend in a spiral or screw-like circular motion. A second column extends the point to four-winged insects, whose front and rear wings likewise perforate and rejoin to gain impetus.

Feathers that open on the upstroke and close on the down
In all birds that fly high, the wings remain perforated as they are raised, but on descending they close and unite. The compressed, condensed air cannot yield to the swift downstroke, so the bird rebounds from that percussion and is carried upward by its acquired impetus for as long as the impetus lasts; then the feathers reopen and, beating down again with fury, regain the lost impetus.
Larks climb straight, birds of prey spiral upward
Birds that rise with straight motion, such as the lark and the like, use this dilation of the feathers. Those that do not spread their feathers, such as the birds of prey, must have a whirling elevation, that is, made like a screw, or a circular motion. Leonardo also notes seeing a bird overturned by the left wind that entered above the wind with its left wing.
Four-winged insects and straight-line rising
The butterfly and many similar insects fly with four wings, the rear pair smaller than the front, the front partly covering the rear. They can rise with straight motion because on lifting, the wings stay perforated with the front higher than the rear; then, lowered, the larger wings join the smaller and regain impetus. Other insects with four equal wings that do not cover one another cannot rise by straight motion.
