On weight: a body bearing on two supports
Weights that divide their load between supports, and the swinging weight
Under the heading 'On weight,' Leonardo argues that a heavy body which does not press along its central line must weigh on two or more supports, illustrated by the body a b c d resting on supports b c and b d. A columnar weight set obliquely divides its load between its lower end and the support that blocks its curved descent, so it does not weigh entirely toward the center of the world. A lower diagram treats the swinging weight, which grows heavier at its appendage the less oblique that appendage is. A red-chalk drawing also appears on the sheet but is not covered by the transcription.
