On weight: bombard ball, balances, and a revolving weight
Motion along the 'site of equality' and weight increased by circular motion
A page of weight studies. Leonardo cites the ball fired from a bombard as an example that a body moving along the 'site of equality' weighs only along its line of motion. A series of balance diagrams then examines the swinging weight, whose heaviness depends on how near to a right angle its appendage meets the balance arm, and a revolving weight that becomes effectively heavier the faster it turns about its pole. Motion of the bombard ball along the site of equality (a b)
The ball fired from a bombard is used as an example: a heavy body moving along the site of equality weighs only along the line of its motion. The trajectory a b illustrates this first part of the argument.
Swinging weight on the balance arm (a b c / f d e)
A weight swinging around the face of the balance arm has more or less heaviness depending on the angle its appendage makes with the arm. The nearer that junction is to a right angle, the greater the effect.
Revolving weight about its pole
A weight revolving with speed about the fixed point of its pole becomes effectively heavier, the swifter its revolving motion. The circular diagram shows the weight carried around the pole.
