How suspended bodies reveal the true, ever-changing motion of a current
Under 'Water', this long note argues that running water contains infinite motions, greater and lesser than its main course. Bodies of the same weight as water, suspended between the surface and the bottom, reveal this true motion: a falling wave may carry such a body down to strike the bottom and, were it spherical, bounce it back to the surface, but its unevenness is caught by reflected waves that turn it now fast, now slow, right and left, up and down, spinning it as it obeys each of its 'movers' and falls prey to whichever prevails. Running water holds infinite motions
Running water contains within it infinite motions, both greater and lesser than its principal course. These hidden currents can be detected through bodies suspended between the surface and the bottom that share the water's own weight and so drift with its true motion.
Suspended bodies tossed by competing waves
A falling wave may carry a neutrally buoyant body to strike the bottom and, if it were spherical, rebound it to the surface; but its uneven shape is caught by a reflected wave on its larger side, turning it now swift now slow, right and left, up and down, spinning on itself. It obeys all its 'movers' and, in their battles, goes as prey to the victor.
