A lake's sudden outflow, and a quicksilver siphon to make fire
River flow and sea tides; a floating siphon that keeps its discharge constant
The leaf opens on the motion of a sudden rush of water from an overflowing lake onto its dry river bed, the current running slower or swifter as the channel is wider, narrower, flatter or deeper, and extends the idea to the flux and reflux of the sea entering the Mediterranean from the Ocean, which rises more where the sea is narrower. A siphon apparatus (cicognola) is then designed to keep its discharge constant: because a falling water surface slows the flow, the siphon is set on a floating 'boat' vessel n resting on a bath of quicksilver m, so that boat and siphon sink together with the surface. The quicksilver pours through the siphon n S t into vessel f, feeding a very fine quickened-copper wire that, on reaching the due weight, falls and makes fire by its blow.

The course of water delivered by an overflowing lake onto the dry river is slower or swifter as the river is wider or narrower, flatter or deeper. Likewise the flux and reflux of the sea entering the Mediterranean from the Ocean, and the rivers that joust with it, raise their waters more or less as that sea is more or less narrow.
A floating siphon that keeps constant discharge
Because a sinking water surface slows a siphon, the vessel n is set as a boat on a bath of quicksilver m; the siphon passes through its bottom from the air into the quicksilver and pours through n S t into vessel f, so that boat and siphon descend together with the surface and the flow stays equal.
A weighted copper wire that strikes fire
The pouring feeds a very fine wire of quickened copper that falls into the vessel; when it acquires the due weight it falls, making fire by the blow. From the skin of the bath to the outer end of the siphon the drop is to be imperceptible.
