Mill channels and how water strikes the wheel
Straighter, faster channels drive the wheel harder; water should hit the blades squarely
Pen notes over red-chalk figures set out the hydraulics of mill races. Water that presses less on its channel runs faster and drives the wheel more, and the channel that loads its bed least is the straighter one. A row of three wheels drawn on a horizontal line, lettered s r o above and m n a below, accompanies rules that mill water should strike the blades at right angles, and that water on a gentler slope hits the wheel farther from the perpendicular of its fall and so gives a lesser blow.

Straighter channels carry faster water
Water that puts less weight on its channel is faster, and the faster water drives its wheel more; the channel that bears least weight is the one that is straighter. The remarks concern the races that feed mills.
Water should strike the wheel blades at right angles
Lettered s r o - m n a, the sketch of hydraulic wheels supports the rule that mill water should strike the blades of the wheels at right angles. Water flowing on a gentler slope strikes the wheel farther from the perpendicular of its fall, and so delivers a lesser blow.
