Of the Moon: Reflected Sunlight and the New Moon's Brightness
The moon shines only by reflected sunlight; its wrinkled seas scatter countless images of the sun
Continuing 'Of the Moon', Leonardo holds that the moon has no light of its own but shines only by the sunlight it receives, and that its night is lit by the sun's image reflected from our waters. He argues the moon's seas are covered with wrinkled water whose countless waves each mirror the sun in many places, comparing this to gilded balls on tall buildings and to the many minute suns seen on the globular surface of a mulberry. From this he explains why the new moon shines brighter than the full moon — its obtuse angle of incidence reflects more rays toward the eye — and adds that the moon is opaque and solid, using the floating yolk of an egg as an analogy for a body suspended in its element.

The moon has no light of its own
Leonardo states the moon has no light except what the sun gives it, and its dark side is lit by sunlight reflected from our own waters. He then explains that the new moon is brighter and more powerful than the full moon because the angle of incidence a on the wave b, reflected to b d where the eye d sits, is far more obtuse than at the full, where the rays run from n to m and rebound away from the western eye.
Countless images of the sun on a wrinkled surface
Because the water of the moon's seas is always wrinkled, its innumerable waves mirror the sun in their hills, hollows and sides, giving as many images as there are viewing positions. A uniform sphere of water would show a single spherical splendour, like a gilded ball; but a rough, globular surface — like a mulberry made of minute round globosities — shows many least suns that merge at distance.
Wrinkled sea makes a continuous broad splendour
The innumerable images reflected from the innumerable waves of the sea, from the solar rays striking those waves, are the cause of a continuous and very broad splendour over the sea's surface. The roughness of the water spreads the reflection rather than concentrating it.
The moon is opaque and solid
The moon is an opaque and solid body; if, as the adversary claims, it were transparent, it would not receive the light of the sun. This supports Leonardo's account of the moon reflecting rather than transmitting sunlight.
The floating egg yolk as an analogy for a body in its element
The yolk sits in the middle of the white without descending, and must be lighter, heavier, or equal to it: if lighter it should rise to touch the shell, if heavier it should sink, if equal it could rest anywhere. Leonardo uses this suspended body to reason about the moon's balance among its elements.
