Earth beneath water, rebound at equal angles, and why water never falls straight through air
A physics opening dominated by a doctrine of the four elements. On 189r Leonardo tabulates their qualities (rare for fire, air and water; dense only for earth) and their natural motions of elevation and descent, and argues that no part of an element weighs within its own element while water never descends straight through air. On 192v he adds that earth lies beneath water as the heavier body, that the parts of earth more mixed with water grow lighter, that a falling body rebounds between equal angles, and that the body with greater resistance descends more slowly. Two qualities and two motions of every element
The elements have two qualities, rare and dense: rare is said of fire, air and water, dense only of earth. Each has continuous and discontinuous quantity, and two natural motions, of elevation and of descent; the lighter the element, the longer its motion in fleeing the element that encloses it. No part of an element weighs within its own element.
Earth lies under water; mixture makes it lighter
The earth stands beneath the water as the heavier body, and the water does not weigh on it nor press its bounds. The part of earth more mixed with water shares more in it, grows lighter and more like the water, and lighter than earth mixed with less water.
A falling thing rebounds between equal angles
Among the opening propositions Leonardo asks why the falling thing rebounds between equal angles, that is, why the angle at which it strikes equals the angle at which it springs back.
Water let fall around the circle a b
A marginal instruction directs that the water be let fall around the circle of a b, keyed to the pair of concentric circles drawn at the centre of the sheet.
Greater resistance, slower descent
That thing will descend with slower motion which has the greater resistance, a note set at the lower left of the sheet.
