Double pump with toothed hub and hammers
The hub n has a double set of teeth that together occupy the whole circle of its face, so that when one semicircle raises its hammer m the other releases its own, keeping the shaft always under the same load. The hub is fixed between the pump body and the step below, rising and descending in one motion that presses the water on the way down and takes up as much again on the way up.
The nature of gravity and levity
Gravity is defined as an accident joined to bodies removed from their natural place, and levity as levity joined with gravity, as unequal weights are joined in a balance or light liquids set beneath heavier ones. The passage turns to water descending through an inverted siphon of pipes of various widths.

Waters joined together do not come to rest unless every part of their surface is equally distant from the centre of the world. In the inverted siphon a c p d t, full of water in a c and of air in t d, if the pipes are of triple proportion the water rising through d t moves at triple the speed of that descending through a b, yet the two surfaces stay at equal heights.

The concavities a b receive the fingers of a descending hand - channel a the four smaller fingers, b the thumb - while channels c d do the same in climbing. The rib n m receives the board f o that forms the front of each step.
