Mediterranean currents, waterfalls, weights and a crossbow
Water in motion across two sub-leaves, with statics and a tin-leaf recipe
The verso is dominated by water: an argument that the current at the Strait of Gibraltar runs stronger to the west because the rivers pouring into the Mediterranean (Nile, Danube, Po, Rhone, Arno, Tiber and others) exceed what the sea discharges to the ocean, together with studies of a ship trapped in a whirlpool, a waterfall hollowing out a pool and eroding its banks, a cataract's rate of fall, and the currents of the enclosed seas. The upper sub-leaf gathers mechanics — every weight weighs along the line of its motion, a crossbow bent by 400 pounds between two pillars, a balance, and columns of arithmetic. Shorter notes include a tin-leaf-and-vinegar recipe for a lantern-like vessel, an expense memorandum for the feast of Saint Ambrose, and a paragone remark that the sculptor cannot represent transparent or luminous things.

Why the Gibraltar current runs west
Leonardo reasons that the mouths of the rivers emptying into the Mediterranean — the Nile watering 3000 miles of Africa, the Bagrada and Mauretanian rivers, the Don, Danube, Po, Rhone, Arno and Tiber — together bring more water than the sea sends through the eighteen-mile strait into the ocean, and that clouds continually lift up more than the rivers restore.
Waterfall hollowing a pool
Water falling from a height forms a deep pool that keeps growing as its banks fall in; the falling water, by the speed and weight of its blow, drives down to the bottom, hollows it, then re-surges by various ways, so the percussion works in a circle and eats away the surrounding banks.
Crossbow bent between two pillars
A crossbow held bent by a force of 400 pounds in place of its cord between two pillars seems to load each pillar with 200 pounds; Leonardo asks why, if each pillar can resist 200 pounds, the bow does not stay fixed but throws the pillar to the ground. A man pressing with his shoulder is discussed the same way.
Every weight weighs along its line of motion
Beside an oscillating rod: every weight weighs along the line of its motion, and, standing still, weighs along the line by which it desires to move.
Tin-leaf and vinegar recipe
A lantern-like vessel is annotated: sealed well, full of white vinegar; take tin in Flemish sheets and lay it over the stars, as figured above.
