Great water-bucket wheel for perpetual motion (778v)
Eight empty and eight full buckets balanced by weight-and-water proportions
A large wheel carries sixteen buckets around its rim: eight empty above (Q p o a b c d e) and eight full of water below, which Leonardo tries to keep permanently out of balance so it will turn of itself. Long calculations weigh each ball and bucket of water against its counterpart, working out by how much 1 2 3 4 exceed 5 6 7 8 in pounds. A smaller wheel at the left adds hinged appendages that, as they turn, pull cords and weights or open and close holes to admit water.

Eight empty buckets Q p o a b c d e ride above the pole and eight water-filled buckets f g h i K l m n face them below, each pair equally distant from the centre. Leonardo argues the water in bucket K, being far from the perpendicular, balances seven of the balls, and reckons that 1 2 3 4 outweigh 5 6 7 8 by 4 1/6 pounds, so the wheel should never come to rest.
Marginal proportions of the counterweights
In the margin Leonardo lists the proportions 1/6, 2/6, 4/6 and 2/3, 3/4, 1/2, the fractional amounts by which each numbered weight and its bucket of water exceeds the opposite member of its pair around the wheel.

A smaller wheel at the left carries appendages that always hang perpendicular with equal weights. Leonardo proposes that as they turn they should pull with cords and weights out of balance, or close and open holes to let the water in and out.
