A gear train to multiply motion, force and heat
A long train of toothed wheels with an arithmetical proof of vast numbers, compared to the sun
Across the top of the sheet runs a long horizontal train of toothed wheels, each of 100 teeth engaging a pinion of 10, so that motion is multiplied twenty-fold at every stage from wheel a through n to the last wheel m. Dense mirror-script and a tall column of ever-larger numbers work out, by arithmetic, that one turn of wheel n would drive wheel m through an astronomical count of turns, faster than sun or planets, and generate fire. Leonardo proposes the device be driven by a 10,000-pound weight pulling an endless screw, with diamond-tipped pivots and wheels of tempered steel, and adds a shorter six-wheel version for making fire quickly.

The train of toothed wheels (rota m to n)
Each wheel carries 100 teeth around its rim and meshes with a pinion (rocca) of 10 spindles, giving twenty of drive to one of counter-drive. The wheels are lettered a, b, c, e, A, n and m; they must be turned in sequence beginning with the middle wheel, otherwise wheel n would never turn the last wheel m.
The instrument compared with the sun
Written within the drawing: the sun, which warms all the world it sees and runs so great a course in 24 hours, would seem motionless and cold beside the turning of wheel m driven by n. The wheels a, b, c, d, e and n must be turned in order for the device to work.
Four results: slowness, speed, and mounting heat
Four things may follow from the instrument: wheel n moves so slowly that anything on earth seems like lightning beside it; wheel m so fast that sun and planets seem sluggish; and its pole grows so hot that, cold at first, it reaches common fire at the fourth wheel and would kill whoever touched wheel m. To resist the heat, the pivots must be diamond points and the wheels of well-tempered steel.
Arithmetical proof of the multiplication
A column of numbers doubles and multiplies from n: 1, 20, 400, 8000, and on to hundreds of thousands of millions of millions. With wheels 1/3 braccio in diameter, a point on the rim travels 333 1/3 miles in a million turns; one full turn of wheel n would carry it an astronomical distance in a three-hundredth of an hour, driven by a 10,000-pound weight on an endless screw.
A six-wheel version for making fire
Along the lower margin: if you want fire quickly, make a similar instrument but with only six wheels, keep a little dry chestnut wood, and proceed as shown in the figure.
