Spiral ascents and the simple and compound modes of soaring flight

Simple and compound circular ascent on the wind
Birds climb without beating their wings by circling on the wind, in two ways. Simple ascent runs along the wind's flight, then turns against the oncoming wind to finish its reflex motion, and is used in strong winds. Compound ascent circles in a semicircle both against and with the wind, and is used in weak winds so the bird rises without being carried off toward the places it travels.
Wings and tail in rising and descending
Rising in reflex motion is always made with wings and tail entirely open; descending in incident motion is made with them largely closed. An imperceptible fanning of the wings, without any other beating, holds the bird balanced and level within the moving air.
Reflex versus incident motion against the wind
Reflex motion against the oncoming wind is always greater than the incident motion; made together with the wind's course it is increased until it equals the incident. The flexible, bendable rear edges of the wings and tail, hard in front where the air is cleft, govern these motions.
