A millstone fed by conduits and shafts carrying rotating vanes
Pen studies scattered over the sheet include a domed millstone (macina), labelled at the right, which Leonardo notes should have a small valve (animella) in its base, as should its feed conduits (doccioni). Lower on the sheet are shafts carrying rotating vanes, one group described as vanes for the defence of walls and another labelled 'Venderà'. Additional frames, ladders and a star-shaped vaned wheel appear at the upper left.

The millstone (macina) is to have a small valve (animella) in its base, and the conduits (doccioni) that feed it are likewise to have one in their base. The device is drawn as a domed assembly at the right, labelled 'macina'.
Rotating vanes for the defence of walls
Lower on the sheet are rotating vanes intended for the defence of the walls, accompanied by a fragmentary note beginning 'guar...'. They are shown as a bladed mechanism.
Shaft with rotating vanes
A shaft (albero) carrying rotating vanes is labelled 'Venderà'. It appears among the smaller mechanical sketches.
