A four-column table of chapters on the motion, forces and works of water
The whole sheet is a densely written table of contents, in four columns with marginal additions, for Leonardo's projected treatise on water. The entries run through the retention of motion in water, the meeting and wearing of currents, riverbanks and reflected waves, the sawing of mountains and draining of lakes, the saltness of the sea, the rising of springs 'like the veins of the blood,' and a great range of practical works—canals made by hand, the draining of marshes, the levelling and straightening of rivers, and the dividing of a great river so armies may cross. A marginal note observes that 'all these books are double, because each has its contrary,' and one entry cites the Arno running down from Montelupo where once there was sea.

Plan of the treatise on water
The first column opens the scheme with the retention of motion less in water than in air, the direction a small river takes on entering a larger current, the defence of riverbanks, reflected waves and the ways flux and reflux are generated among islands. Each heading is a projected chapter, several keyed with marginal numbers. Together they map the science of moving water Leonardo meant to write.
Rivers that saw mountains and the salt of the sea
Among the chapters he lists how rivers fill the sea and drive it from its place, how they have sawn through mountains and drained lakes, the saltness of the sea and whence it arises, and how water rises against its natural motion to the mountain-tops as blood does in the veins of animals. He adds that all the veins and rivers of the world are joined together. These entries treat the body of the earth as shaped by water.
Falling drops and the sphere of water
The fourth column asks whether the motion of water through a pipe of varying width changes along its course, and treats the single drop and the continuously falling stream. Other entries ask whether the sphere of water is concentric with the centre of the earth and how it can move against its own course. The questions probe the physical laws behind water's behaviour.
Canals, drainage and dividing rivers
Practical works fill many headings: conducting water under, along and above the ground, draining marshes by making the water carry soil, navigable canals made by hand, and dividing a great river into little branches that armies can cross. He also treats breaking and repairing riverbanks and flooding enclosed valleys. These are the engineering applications of the whole science of water.
Every book paired with its contrary
A marginal note declares that all these books are double, because each one has its contrary, followed by chapters on the interrupted line of mill-water before it strikes the wheel and on the joining of waters of various depths. The remark sets out the method of the whole treatise as one of opposed cases. It shows Leonardo organising the subject dialectically.
