The Origin of Seas and a Treatise on Waves
A sand-bottomed model of the Mediterranean; waves as reflected percussions
A hydrology sheet arguing that all lakes, gulfs and inland seas are born from the rivers that feed them and from the obstacles to their outflow, taking the Mediterranean -- divider of Africa, Europe and Asia, fed by the Nile and the Tanais (Don) and draining at Gibraltar -- as its case. Beside a schematic map of the sea with its rivers marked (Nile f, Tanais o, Po h), Leonardo proposes a sand-bottomed scale model with proportioned rivers to study where the water erodes and deposits. He then sets out a treatise 'On the wave', defining the wave as an impression of reflected percussion, describing how waves compound from many others, reflect at equal angles, go and return in small pools, and penetrate one another without being destroyed.

A working model of the Mediterranean
Make a figuration of the Mediterranean with rivers proportioned to its size, the Nile pouring in at f, the Tanais at o, the Po at h, and the outlet at the Strait of Gibraltar. With a flat sand bottom one may see where the motion of water takes away and where it deposits.

On the wave: reflected percussion
The wave is an impression of reflected percussion, greater or smaller in proportion to the percussion, and never alone but mixed with as many waves as the object has inequalities. Waves of equal size and power reflect at equal angles, and only in the greatest open sea do waves travel without reflection.
Waves pass through one another
All impressions of percussions made on water can penetrate one another without their destruction; yet one wave never truly penetrates another, but they only reflect from the place of their percussion. The greatest wave is clothed with innumerable smaller waves moving to different aspects.
The striker joins the struck; river floods
Where a river's two reflections meet, the impetus of the striker joins the struck, and if the striker is larger, a part equal to the struck reflects back while the rest keeps its incident motion. Floods arise when valley mouths cannot discharge the water as fast as the valley receives it.
