Machines for raising water; diving and water-walking devices
A crowded sheet of pumps, screw-engines and wells, with a diver's reed-tube and floats for walking on water.
The sheet gathers many devices for lifting and drawing up water: a large screw-and-wheel engine said to raise more than ten barrels at a turn, bellows-driven pumps, crank-worked well machines and hydraulic and bailing pumps. Along the upper left are two apparatus for the human body in water — a submerged man breathing through a reed and cork, and a figure walking on the surface. Leonardo's notes explain the gearing and forces, including how a single-toothed pinion advances the screw twenty threads per wheel-turn.

Screw-and-wheel engine to raise ten barrels of water
A screw that turns always the same way yet goes and returns; its wheel-teeth are twisted so as to meet the square pinion because the frame is triangular. Leonardo claims it would raise more than 10 barrels of water at a turn and drive them as high as wished. Because the turning pinion has only a single tooth, one turn of the great wheel advances the screw 20 threads.
Bellows device to make water rise
In the lower right half a machine fitted with a bellows is labelled as a way of making water rise, with the bellows itself marked for drawing up water. The chamber beneath holds water and a small flap-valve.
Diving apparatus with reed tube and cork
At the upper left are heads of submerged men wearing goggles and a breathing tube. The captions name a reed and cork and call it a way of going underwater.
Floats for walking on the water
A standing figure is shown supported on the water surface, captioned as a way of walking upon water.
Crank-driven well machine raising a piston
Toward the centre a machine draws from a well, its parts numbered 8, 32, 6, 24. The note explains that for every four turns of the wheel's handle the rod (piston) rises and falls.
