Winds descending mountains: waves, eddies and whirlwinds
How wind strikes peaks and valley mouths, rebounds, and forms whirlwinds

The motions of the winds run along every line
Whirlwinds and eddies arise in winds that open in the embrace of mountains or of some building and then strike one another with force on rejoining; their reflected motions are not straight, because the wind is impeded by matter like itself and must spend its impetus, rising upward when it cannot return along the lines of its incidence.
Wind grows dense on peaks and at valley mouths
On the peaks of the mountains the wind becomes very dense, and likewise at the mouths of the valleys when the mountains that enclose those valleys are of great height. Contrary winds enter one beneath the other either by wind reflected back after striking the mountains, or when opposing winds strike their weaker parts with their stronger.
Wind driving waves like a river beating its banks
The wind descending the seaward slopes penetrates to the bottom and makes waves whose flanks resemble the shore they descend, so the waves have narrow and deep intervals, as said in the book of the motion of waters. After striking, the wind rises, meets and condenses another wind, and leaps down again like rivers that beat against their banks.
